Awendaw, SC – After entering the final round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in seventh place, the Virginia men’s golf team saw its chances of a high finish at one of the nation’s top events fade during the last day of play. After posting scores of 297 and 281 on the first two days, the Cavaliers shot 19-over 307 during the final round to place 14th in the 15-team field.

Virginia’s 54-hole score was 885, one shot ahead of 28th-ranked Auburn. The Cavaliers were just eight shots out of seventh place in the tightly packed field.

Virginia senior Brad Tilley managed the Cavaliers’ best final-round score with a 5-over 76. During its first two rounds the team only had to count a score that high once. Daniel Kefale, who posted a career-best 6-under 65 on Monday, shot 6-over 77 along with teammates Conrad Von Borsig and Carter Henderson. Eamonn McLoughlin posted a 7-over 78.

Wake Forest won the team championship by 16 shots at 10-under 842. South Carolina tied Central Florida for second at 858 and Augusta State was fourth at 860. Augusta State’s Jamie Miller, who shot 64 during the second round, managed to slip by Wake’s Webb Simpson for medalist honors. Miller finished at 9-under 204, one shot ahead of Simpson.

Kefale, a freshman, was Virginia’s top individual finisher in 26th place at 6-over 219. It marked the first time during his career that he led the team in scoring. His gross total was one shot off his best collegiate finish. Tilley was 38th at 221 while Henderson and McLoughlin tied for 47th at 223 and von Borsig was 69th at 230.

Virginia’s next match will take place April 7-8 at the Marriott Invitational in Raleigh.
