No. 18 NC State Uses Big-Inning to Defeat No. 14 UVa, 10-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – – No. 18 NC State used a seven-run fifth inning and Andrew Brackman held No. 14 Virginia to two runs in six innings as the Wolfpack defeated the Cavaliers, 10-2, Friday night in the first game of their Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field. Tim Henry, Tom Hagan, Jeremy Farrell, Brandon Guyer and Brandon Marsh each had one hit for the Cavaliers, who fell to 24-6 and 6-4 in the ACC.
Sean Doolittle (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings and struck out three. Andrew Carraway pitched three innings in relief. He allowed four runs, all unearned, on four hits. Alex Smith pitched the final inning.
Brackman (1-2) tossed six innings and recorded 10 strikeouts for the Wolfpack (23-8, 6-4 ACC). He held UVa to two earned runs on three hits. Matt Camp and Ramon Corona each had three hits for the Wolfpack. Corona also added three runs and two RBI. Jon Still was 2-for-4 with three RBI for NC State, who out-hit UVa, 13-5.
NC State tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth on John Still’s two-run single with one out. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth on a single, a Virginia error and a walk. Corona singled to left field putting NC State ahead, 4-2. The Wolfpack tacked on two more runs when Ryan Pond reached on a two-base error with a draw-in infield which allowed Corona and Aaron Bates to score to make it, 6-2. RBI singles from Brian Aragon, Matt Camp and a run scoring double from Matt Mangini gave NC State a 9-2 lead after six innings.
The Wolfpack extended its lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Still grounded out to score Corona.
Virginia pushed across the first two runs of the game in the top of the fourth. Brandon Guyer reached on an error and stole second. Tom Hagan’s RBI single through the right side gave the Hoos a 1-0 lead. After Jeremy Farrell’s single put runners on the corners, Brackman was called for a balk bringing in Hagan to give UVa a 2-0 lead.
Virginia and NC State will play the second game of their three-game series Saturday at 7 p.m. Freshman right-hander Jacob Thompson (5-1, 2.00 ERA) will face NC State lefty Eric Surkamp.
