Virginia Rowing Announces Class of 2010

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team announced its Class of 2010 on Friday.
The class of 17 incoming student-athletes has committed to row for the Cavaliers next season. The class includes those who have signed National Letters of Intent as well as those who have accepted enrollment to the University.
“We are very excited about the entering class of 2010,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “They are young women of character, strong students, and successful athletes. We are looking forward to what they will bring to our team. I can’t thank assistant coaches Steve Pritzker and Veronika Platzer enough, as well as the current team members, for their role in the recruiting process. We look forward to this class building on the successful rowing tradition here at the University of Virginia.”
Frosty Baylor (Northfield, Ill.) of New Trier High School has been a member of the Midwest Scholastic Championship gold medal boat as stroke.
Desiree Burns (Hyde Park, N.Y.) of Franklin D. Roosevelt High School has been on the U.S. Junior Team, both in the four in 2004, and in the pair in 2005.
Shalane Carlson (Vancouver, B.C.) of the Victoria City Rowing Club is one of the top junior lightweights in Canada.
Alexandra Clair (Cincinnati, Ohio) of the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club was invited to the U.S. Selection Camp in 2004. She has won gold medals at the U.S. Youth Invitational and Midwest Championships.
Caitlin Clark (Darien, Conn.) of the Maritime Rowing Club was in the winning eight at the U.S. Rowing Nationals in 2004 and 2005.
Emelia Colman-Shepherd (Port Moody, B.C.) of the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club won several gold medals at the Canadian Henley in both sculling and sweeping events.
Jenny Cromwell (Seattle Wash.) of the Pocock Rowing Center was the stroke of the U.S. 8 at the 2005 Junior World Championships.
Nancy Graves (Washington, N.C.) of St. Andrews High School won the Stotesbury Regatta and was second at the Women’s Henley.
Lauren Hutchins (Vancouver, B.C.) of the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club won several gold medals at the Canadian Henley in both sculling and sweeping events. Colman-Shepherd and Hutchins are club teammates.
Hannah Jordan-Squires (Seattle, Wash.)of the Pocock Center is currently in the varsity eight at Pocock.
Marie Long (Baltimore Md.) of the St. Paul’s School is a newcomer to the sport, but was in the winning 8 at the 2005 U.S. Rowing Nationals.
Summers Nelson (Kansas City, Mo.) of Notre Dame de Sion medaled at U.S. Rowing Nationals in 2003, 2004 and 2005, in the sculling events.
Riley Perrin (Charlottesville, Va.) ran cross country and track at Charlottesville HS. She will be new to rowing in the fall.
Nora Phillips (Arlington, Va.) is an in-state rower who was a member of the U.S. Rowing Honor Roll and an Honorable Mention All-Met in 2005, stroking the Washington -Lee HS varsity eight.
Becky Ryall (Auckland, New Zealand) competed in the four at the Junior World Championships in 2005.
Caitlin Speaker (Washington Crossing, Pa.) of the Hun School is new to the sport of rowing, but has had significant success in field hockey and track.
Helen Tompkins (Houston, Texas) won the Jr. double at the U.S. Rowing Nationals and CanAmMex in 2005 .
The Virginia Cavaliers will compete at the South/Central Regionals in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 13-14.
