GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team is the sixth seed in the 15th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship, which will be held May 11-14 at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Cavaliers (28-24, 7-13 ACC) begin play in the eight-team double elimination tournament on Thursday (May 11) at 10:00 a.m. when they play third-seeded Virginia Tech (37-17, 12-8 ACC) in the first game of the tourney.

NC State (44-18, 14-6 ACC) is the top seed, while North Carolina (46-15, 13-7 ACC) is the second seed. Virginia Tech is seeded third and Georgia Tech (43-18, 12-9 ACC) is the fourth seed. Florida State (38-25, 10-10 ACC) captured the fifth seed, while UVa is seeded sixth. Maryland (32-25, 7-13 ACC) and Boston College (22-24, 6-15 ACC) are the seventh and eighth seeds, respectively.

The winner of the Virginia-Virginia Tech game moves on to play the winner of the North Carolina-Maryland matchup at 12:30 p.m. Friday (May 12). The loser of the UVa-Virginia Tech game will play at 8:00 p.m. Thursday against either North Carolina or Maryland.

The Cavaliers have advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament four times in the last eight years (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2003). UVa has played in the championship game of the ACC Tournament seven times in the tourney’s 14-year history. Virginia won the 1994 ACC Tournament by defeating Florida State 3-0 in the title game.
