Cardiac Cavs: Seabury's Homer Starts Rally as #6 Virginia Downs ODU, 11-10

NORFOLK, Va. – – Beau Seabury hit a lead-off home run to start a three-run ninth inning as No. 6 Virginia rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat Old Dominion, 11-10, Tuesday evening at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex in the Cavaliers’ final nonconference game. Seabury and Jeremy Farrell each went 3-for-5 for the Cavaliers (42-11) who pounded out 17 hits. Josh Myers picked up his third win and Casey Lambert registered his eighth save.
“That was a great team effort from our players,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “It’s hard to come back from a large lead on the road against a good team. We had great at-bats and put pressure on their pitchers to get us out. We had clutch hits while our bullpen stepped up to hold their offense at bay.”
Sean Doolittle, David Adams, Tom Hagan and Mike Mitchell all went 2-for-4. Doolittle, Hagan and Farrell each had two RBIs. Myers struck out the only batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth. Lambert had two strikeouts in the final inning to secure the win. Pat McAnaney pitched four scoreless innings in relief and struck out six. Shooter Hunt started the game for the Cavaliers. He gave up six runs, three earned in 2/3 of an inning before giving way to Andrew Carraway who threw 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three. Patrick Nichols led Old Dominion (38-13) going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Mike Zahm was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as six different Monarchs had at least two hits. Dana Arrowood (5-2) suffered his second loss of the season as he gave up three runs in one inning.
The Cavaliers used a three-run ninth inning to get an 11-10 lead. Seabury’s lead-off home run in the top of the ninth pulled UVa within, 10-9. After Mitchell, Marsh and Doolittle all walked to load the bases, Hagan singled up the middle driving in Mitchell. Marsh scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by the shortstop. Old Dominion broke the 8-8 tie in the bottom of the eighth on Patrick Nichols’ two-run single to go on top, 10-8. Myers then struck out Justin Gregula on three pitches to get the Cavs out of the inning.
Virginia rallied to tie the game in the top of the eighth. After Adams tripled to center field, Tom Hagan singled down the right field line to make it, 8-7. After Hagan stole second., Farrell’s RBI single to right field drove him in to make it, 8-8.
Mitchell’s RBI single in the top of the seventh scored Seabury pulling UVa within, 8-6. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth. Adams grounded into a double play that scored Miclat cutting it to, 8-5. Virginia trailed 7-1 heading into the top of the fourth. Doolittle ripped a two-out double down the right field line scoring Greg Miclat and Mitchell as UVa trailed, 7-3. Adams knocked in Doolittle with a base-hit into right field for 7-4 deficit. ODU made it 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth on Zahm’s solo home run.
Farrell’s RBI double in the top of third scored David Adams to make it, 6-1. ODU answered with a run in the bottom of the third on Jesse’ Schoendienst’s sacrifice fly that scored Chris Keenan.
Old Dominion jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Dana Arrowood’s two-run home run gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Patrick Nichols followed with a solo homer to left field as ODU led, 3-0. After a Virginia error loaded the bases, a hit batter and two walks brought in three more runs for the six-run ODU lead.
Virginia closes out the regular season Thurs-Sat. UVa hosts Virginia Tech in the final Atlantic Coast Conference series. Game times are 7 p.m. Thursday night and Friday night while Saturday’s finale is set for 2 p.m. UVa will recognize its six seniors on Saturday.
