CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Freshman right-hander Jacob Thompson tossed a four-hit complete game shutout as No. 6 Virginia blanked Virginia Tech, 6-0, to capture its second win of the Atlantic Coast Conference series at Davenport Field in front of another record crowd of 2,624 fans. Beau Seabury hit his second home run of the week for the Cavaliers, who tied the school record for wins in a single season. Virginia is now 44-11 and 20-9 in the ACC.

“Jacob (Thompson) has been so consistent for us all season,” UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor said. “He kept his pitch count down and let his defense get outs. Our hitters were aggressive early in getting good base hits and driving in runners.”

Thompson (10-2) followed Sean Doolittle in becoming the fourth Cavalier to register a 10-win season. He matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in throwing his first complete game. He retired 10 consecutive batters before having a baserunner reach on an error in the eighth inning. It was Virginia’s 10th shutout of the season. Mike Mitchell led UVa going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Seabury ended up 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. David Adams went 1-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cavs. Greg Miclat, Brandon Marsh, Brandon Guyer and Jeremy Farrell all had one hit. Sean O’Brien led the Hokies going 2-for-4.

Seabury’s second home run of the week and second career home run capped a three-run fourth inning to put UVa ahead, 6-0, in the bottom of the fourth. He launched a two-run shot over the wall in left center. Farrell’s sacrifice fly scored Brandon Guyer to make it, 4-0, in the fourth. Mitchell’s RBI single in the bottom of the second brought in Farrell, who led off the inning with a double to right center.

The Cavaliers wasted no time putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. Greg Miclat singled down the left field line and Brandon Marsh singled to left field. With on out, David Adams ripped a double to right center to score both runs for a 2-0 Cavalier lead.

Virginia and Virginia Tech wrap up their series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Senior lefty Mike Ballard will start for Virginia. UVa will recognize its six seniors in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m.: LHP Mike Ballard, catcher Matt Bernstine, infielder Mike Campagna, Utility Tom Hagan, RHP Josh Myers and RHP Allie Swanson.
