GREENSBORO, N.C. – – Virginia wrestlers Nick Alparone and Scott Smith have been named to the 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Wrestling Team as announced by Commissioner John Swofford. Alparone and Smith were two of 15 wrestlers selected to the inaugural team.

Alparone, a rising second-year, finished the season 11-15 overall and 4-6 in duals. He ended the season as the starter at 141 pounds for the Cavaliers in helping Virginia to a 12-5 record and 4-1 mark in the ACC. He registered three falls and two major decisions.

Smith, a rising fourth-year majoring in Art-Studio, spent time at heavyweight before back to 197 pounds. He posted a 9-7 record while spending the majority of the season as a red-shirt.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

The Duke Blue Devils led all schools with five honorees on this year’s team. The Maryland Terrapins, ACC regular season co-champions, placed three student-athletes on the academic squad, followed by North Carolina, NC State and ACC regular season co-champion Virginia with two selections apiece. The Hokies of Virginia Tech rounded out the inaugural team with one honoree.
