CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia athletics department announced today plans to broaden its radio partnership with the Charlottesville Radio Group (CRG). The new agreement expands the role CRG plays as the radio flagship partner for Virginia Athletics.

WWWV-FM (97.5) and WINA-AM (1070) will continue to serve as the home for Virginia’s football and men’s basketball broadcasts for the next five years, while WINA-AM will be the home for Cavalier Call-In and Virginia women’s basketball play-by-play broadcasts.

CRG will continue its expanded UVa coverage by carrying live broadcasts of baseball and men’s lacrosse games on WINA-AM and its newest station, WVAX-AM (1450). CRG will also continue to carry Inside Virginia Women’s Basketball with Debbie Ryan and the Cavalier Minute.

CRG’s new responsibilities include coordinating all production, engineering, and delivery of Virginia Sports Radio Network programming to the network affiliates across the Commonwealth. This marks the first time CRG will distribute the programming for the Virginia Sports Radio Network. CRG’s parent company, Saga Communications, has extensive experience with running state news/farm, college sports and professional sports radio networks.

“We are not only pleased but honored to continue our long-standing relationship with University of Virginia Athletics,” said Dennis Mockler, Vice President and General Manager of the Charlottesville Radio Group. “We’re excited about our new, expanded role as the Virginia Sports Radio Network originating flagship station and to the new opportunities we will be developing as we grow our partnership with UVa Athletics,”

“In a fluctuating market, it is a tremendous benefit to our athletics program and many Cavalier fans to continue this great relationship with the Charlottesville Radio Group, ” said Jon Oliver, Virginia’s executive associate director of athletics. “We truly appreciate all the efforts everyone at Charlottesville Radio Group has made to provide a very high level of coverage for Virginia’s athletic teams.”

Virginia kicks off its 2006 football season on Sept. 2 at Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Virginia Sports Radio Network coverage will begin at 6 p.m., with the WINA-AM coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m.
