COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Virginia women’s tennis player Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won the ITA Southwest Region Summer Circuit Event held last week on the campus of Texas A&M. Rales, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, won five matches to capture the title.

Rales opened the tournament by winning her first three matches in convincing fashion, losing just six games in the three matches combined. In the semifinals, she met Texas A&M’s Sarah Foster, the tournament’s No. 1 seed. After losing the first set 6-1, Rales rallied to win the second set 7-5 before taking the superbreaker 10-6. In the final, she met Julie Voss of Ohio State, the No. 2 seed. She defeated Voss 6-4, 6-0 to win the championship.

Fellow Cavalier Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) also competed in the tournament, and was the No. 3 seed. Pereira won her first three matches in the event before falling to Voss in the semifinals in a third-set superbreaker.

The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit is made up of six regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Southwest and West) for collegiate. Each region consists of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July before a national tournament held in August. Each tournament consists of a men’s singles and doubles and women’s singles and doubles draw.
