IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Virginia swimming program had six swimmers compete in finals sessions during the first two days (Aug. 1-2) of the 2006 ConocoPhillips National Swimming Championships, which are being held at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center. Third-year Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was one of three Cavaliers to compete in an “A” final as he placed seventh in the 400-meter individual medley. UVa graduates Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) also competed in “A” finals.

Mellors was seventh in the 400-meter I.M. with a time of 4:23.05 after placing eighth in the preliminaries (4:22.77). Second-year T.J. Southmayd (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was 43rd in the 400 I.M. in a time of 4:36.18.

Crippen registered the top finish by a Cavalier swimmer as he was fifth in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:51.07 on Aug. 1. He was second after the preliminaries, clocking a time of 3:51.22. Fourth-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) swam in the “B” final of the 400 free and finished 10th overall with a time of 3:53.65. He was 11th in the prelims at 3:54.44. First-year Dan McMahon (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) rounded out UVa’s competitors in the 400 free and was 68th in 4:07.10. Crippen also swam in the “C” final of the 200-meter butterfly on Aug. 2 and finished 20th overall with a time of 2:02.50. Second-year Pat Reams (North Easton, Mass./Boston College High) was 22nd with a time of 2:02.85. Crippen was 19th in the prelims at 2:02.28, while Reams was 22nd (2:02.78). McMahon was 49th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.45.

Millen and Mellors both swam the 200-meter free and competed in the “C” final. Millen was 19th overall with a time of 1:51.35, while Mellors was 21st in a time of 1:51.85. Millen was 24th in the prelims (1:51.73) and Mellors was 27th (1:52.03). UVa had two swimmers in the 100-meter backstroke. Second-year Tony Colella (Austin, Texas/Westwood) was 33rd in a time of 58.58, while second-year Bjorn Falk (Wilton, N.H./High Mowing) was 44th (59.40).

White was the third Virginia swimmer to reach an “A” final. She was seventh in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:03.54 on Aug. 2. White was also seventh after the preliminaries, posting a time of 1:03.62.

Third-year Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) competed in the “C” final of the 100-meter breaststroke and was 18th overall with a time of 1:03.45 on Aug. 1. He was 18th in the prelims with a time of 1:03.39. Third-year PJ Sullivan (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) also swam the 100 breast and was 39th with a time of 1:04.83.

Fourth-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) swam a time trial in the 400-meter freestyle on Aug. 1 and clocked a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifying time of 4:18.74. First-year Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) and third-year Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) rounded out UVa’s individual event competitors in the first two days of summer nationals. Narum placed 23rd in the 400-meter free with a time of 4:18.08, while Glover was 81st in the 100-meter butterfly in a time of 1:04.07. Glover also teamed with fourth-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) and third-year Jessica Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The UVa trio along with another swimmer combined for a 13th-place time of 3:52.88.

The 2006 ConocoPhillips National Swimming Championships continue through Friday (Aug. 5).
