CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Sophomore forward Yannick Reyering and junior forward Matt Ayotte each scored a goal and No. 4 Virginia out-shot Georgetown, 21-3, as the Cavaliers shut out the Hoyas, 2-0, Wednesday night in an exhibition game at Klockner Stadium. Freshman midfielder Jonathan Villanueva, junior defender Matt Williams and senior midfielder Drew Harrison each had assists for the Cavaliers.

“We created a lot of opportunities for ourselves and came away with two really nice goals,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “It was nice to see how we looked against someone other than ourselves. We’ve been practicing all preseason on a shorter field, and had some trouble with our spacing early, but we made adjustments to get good looks on goal.”

Reyering put Virginia on top, 1-0, in the 14th minute. After Matt Williams served a long pass into the middle of the field, Jonathan Villanueva slipped a pass to Reyering on the run. He side-stepped the Georgetown goalie and tapped in the ball for the Cavaliers first goal.

Virginia struck again in the 64th minute when Ayotte knocked in a cross from Harrison after a corner kick giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead.

Georgetown had its best opportunity of tying the game in the 50th minute when Daniel Grasson was fouled inside the box. He lined up for a penalty kick, but missed wide, as UVa held on to the 1-0 lead.

Virginia held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Andrew Keszler and Joe Devine each had two saves for the Hoyas in goal. Ryan Burke played the first 45 minutes in goal for UVa before giving way to Michael Giallombardo in the second half.

The Cavaliers wrap up their exhibition season Saturday when they host VCU at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
