Virginia Volleyball Rolls To 3-0 Win Over Miami

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After suffering a season-opening loss to 11th-ranked Tennessee Friday night, the Virginia volleyball team rebounded with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-20) victory over Miami (Ohio) Saturday (Aug. 26) in the Comast Lady Vol Classic at Stokely Athletic Center. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 1-1 on the season, while Miami (Ohio) also stands at 1-1. UVa concludes play in the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. match against Centenary.
Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) led four UVa players in double figures in kills with a match-high 14. Kirkwood also added 12 digs for a double-double and led all players with three service aces. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) nearly recorded a double-double as she totaled 10 kills and nine blocks. She hit .348 in the match. In just her second collegiate match, outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) tallied 11 kills while hitting .333. Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) slammed 10 kills on 17 attempts with no errors for an impressive .588 hitting percentage.
Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) handed out 45 assists for an average of 15.0 per game. She also contributed six blocks and five digs. Third-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) paced all players with 20 digs.
Jeanna Staun and Megan Griffin led Miami with 11 kills apiece. Setter Andrea Atteberry recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs. Melissa Zenz led Miami in digs as she registered 14.
After hitting just .006 against Tennessee Friday night, the Cavaliers bounced back by hitting .291 against Miami with 52 kills and only 14 attack errors. Miami hit .155 with 43 kills and 23 errors. Both teams had 57 digs, but UVa held a 10-5 edge in team blocks and a 6-2 advantage in service aces.
In the first game, Miami scored the first two points, but UVa responded by scoring nine of the next 10 points to take the lead for good, 9-3. The Cavaliers used consecutive blocks by Emily Kirkwood and Oakes to close out the first game 30-24.
Virginia took a 6-1 lead in game two, but Miami came back to take a 22-21 advantage and then increased its lead to 24-22. Consecutive kills by fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas), Dickson and Davis gave UVa a 25-24 lead. Davis added three more kills to help UVa secure a 30-26 win in the second game.
UVa raced out to a 7-1 lead in game three only to see Miami run off seven consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead. With the match tied at 13-13, UVa took the lead for good on a kill by Emily Kirkwood. UVa quickly extended its lead to 19-13 and the Cavaliers went on to a 30-20 win to clinch the victory.
