CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team opened the home portion of its 2006 season with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 32-30) victory over Georgetown Friday evening (Sept. 1) in the Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament. UVa hit an impressive .344 in the match and put forth a balanced offensive attack as five Cavaliers reached double figures kills. With the victory, Virginia improves to 3-1 on the season, while Georgetown falls to 1-3. In the first match of the Jefferson Cup, East Carolina (2-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 (24-30, 27-30, 30-23, 30-24, 17-15) victory over Wright State (1-4).

In Virginia’s 3-0 win over Georgetown, first-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) led all players with 12 kills in the match. Fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) hit an impressive .526 in the match with 11 kills on 19 swings and only one error. Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) also tallied 11 kills and registered a match-high four service aces. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) and second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) both notched 10 kills. Oakes hit .500 in the match and added four blocks, while Davis led all players with eight blocks and hit .364.

Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) handed out 48 assists for an average of 16.0 per game. She also contributed four blocks. Third-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) led UVa’s defensive effort with 11 digs.

Jessica Buffum and Jessica Hardy both tallied 11 kills for Georgetown. Hardy also added a match-high 12 digs to record a double-double. Setters Caitlin Boland and Kate Fisher had 17 and 16 assists, respectively.

As a team, Virginia hit .344 in the match with 55 kills and just 13 attack errors. The Hoyas posted a .211 hitting percentage with 44 kills and 21 errors. UVa held a 12-7 advantage in team blocks and a 6-4 edge in service aces. Georgetown out-dug UVa 44-39.

UVa exploded out of the gates, as it quickly opened a 10-1 lead in the first game. The Cavaliers hit .389 to take the opening frame 30-20. In game two, the Cavaliers out-hit Georgetown .314 to .111 and posted a 30-24 victory. The third game was close throughout, but a kill by second-year outside hitter Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) at game point tied the third contest at 30-30. A GU ball handling error gave UVa a 31-30 lead and the Cavaliers closed out the match with block assists from Oakes and Emily Kirkwood to make the final score 32-30.

The Jefferson Cup concludes Saturday (Sept. 2) with four matches at Memorial Gym. East Carolina and Georgetown meet at 11:00 a.m., followed by Virginia and Wright State at 1:00 p.m. Georgetown and Wright State square off at 5:00 p.m. and Virginia and East Carolina close out the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match.
