Virginia Volleyball Knocks Off Wright State 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) registered a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs to help lead the Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 30-21) victory over Wright State Saturday afternoon (Sept. 2) in the Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament, which is being held in Memorial Gym. With the win, UVa improves to 2-0 in the tournament and 4-1 on the season. The Raiders fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the tourney. In the opening match Saturday morning, East Carolina defeated Georgetown 3-1 (22-30, 30-22, 30-27, 30-20).
Kirkwood led all players with her 16 kills and she hit .286 in the contest. Kirkwood also added four blocks and two service aces for 20 total points in the match. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) added12 kills and a match-high six blocks, including a solo stop. Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) recorded a .412 hitting percentage with eight kills on 17 attempts with one error. She also had four blocks. First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) posted nine kills.
Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) dished out 46 assists, while third-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) registered a match-high 17 digs.
Jenny Schultz led Wright State with 12 kills while hitting .417. Setter Lindsey Frank notched a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs. Sarah Poling led the Raiders in digs with 16.
Virginia hit .281 in the match with 53 kills and 15 errors, while the Raiders hit .131 with 38 kills and 22 errors. UVa held a 10-5 advantage in team blocks and an 11-3 edge in service aces. Wright State held a 62-51 advantage in digs.
The Cavaliers led throughout the first game and won 30-27. Virginia only hit .196 in the first frame, but held the Raiders to a .094 hitting percentage. Dickson, Oakes, Davis and fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) combined for 17 of UVa’s 19 kills in a 30-22 win in game two. UVa sealed the victory with a 30-21 win in the third game. Sarah Kirkwood had nine of the Cavaliers’ 21 kills in the game and UVa hit .436 as a team.
The Jefferson Cup concludes with two matches Saturday evening. Georgetown plays Wright State at 5:00 p.m. and Virginia plays East Carolina for the tournament title at 7:00 p.m.
