The Virginia women’s cross country team showed off their depth today as five student-athletes finished in the top-11, leading to the Cavaliers’ winning the team title over ACC rival Wake Forest 29-41. Led by All-Regional performer Emily Harrison, who took second overall, Virginia’s women ran 2-3-5-8-11 and finished less than a minute apart. Virginia’s sixth and seventh runners also both finished in the top-20. On the men’s side, Andrew Jesien finished fifth overall as the men, running without their top-seven runners, took second place behind Liberty.

Harrison, who earned All-ACC and All-Regional honors in 2005, again led the Cavaliers with a 17:43.8 run over the 5K race. Six seconds behind her was teammate Katie Read, while fellow All-Regional performer Kara Scanlin and teammate Laura Hodges finished seventh and tenth overall.

The men sat the majority of the top runners from last year’s ACC championship team, while Jesien, who red shirted in 2005, led the Cavalier contingent today over the 8K course. Jesien ran a 25:17.7, while teammates Taylor Smith and James Erickson ran sub-26, finishing just four seconds apart from each other. The men all finished within one minute of each other, giving Virginia a strong pack that was able to displace William & Mary, sending the Tribe into third.

Virginia returns to action in two weeks as the Cavaliers travel to Minnesota to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.
