Burlington, Vt. – Former UVa lacrosse standout Ryan Curtis has been named the head men’s lacrosse at the University of Vermont. Curtis replaces Steve Beville who resigned to become the coach at Cortland State.
Last year Curtis served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth, where he was involved with practice preparation, team and individual drills and worked closely with the defensive unit.
“We are excited to have Ryan assume the head coaching role in our men’s lacrosse program,” Vermont Director of Athletics Dr. Robert Corran said. “He brings tremendous experience as a player at every level of the game and all the attributes of a leader and coach. He has a bright coaching future ahead of him and I’m thrilled that it will be as a Catamount.”
“I am very excited to be here and this is a great opportunity for me professionally and for my family,” Curtis said. “Dr. Corran and Chris McCabe (Assistant Vice President for Athletic Marketing and Business Development) have been great and I want to thank them for this opportunity. Plans are in place for the team to succeed here and I am excited to get started.”
Curtis has spent six seasons with the Boston Cannons in Major League Lacrosse and is considered one of the league’s top defensemen. He has been named the Cannons’ Defensive Player of the Year four times in his career. He has been named an MLL All-Star five times and named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2003.
He had a highly decorated career at UVa, earning first-team All-American honors in 1999 and 2000. In the Cavaliers’ national championship season in 1999 he was named the National Defenseman of the Year. A 2000 graduate with a degree in religious studies and history, he was also named to the 50th Anniversary All-ACC Team.
