CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Junior midfielders Nico Colaluca and Chris Tierney each scored a goal and senior goalkeeper Ryan Burke recorded his fifth shutout of the season as No. 3 Virginia shut out Liberty, 2-0, Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium. Virginia improved to 11-1-0 on the season, which is the best start since the 2001 season.

“It was good to get some guys some rest and not have a letdown coming off a great win at home over the weekend,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We were able to score a couple of goals and come away with a result. Now, we have to get ready to travel to face a good Duke team.”

The Cavaliers struck first in the 25th minute. Zola Short had a throw-in from the right side. His throw found the head of Yannick Reyering, who flicked it to Adam Cristman. Cristman’s header found the Colaluca’s feet inside the 6-yard box. Colaluca knocked in his fifth goal of the season giving the Hoos an early 1-0 lead.

Reyering had a chance to extend the Cavalier lead right before halftime. He had a shot blocked right inside the 18 keeping the score, 1-0, after one period.

Tierney gave Virginia a 2-0 lead on his first goal of the season. Neil Barlow found Sean Hinkle over the middle. Hinkle dribbled into the box and found Tierney on the left, whose left-footed blast from 12 yards found the inside of the left post.

Virginia out-shot Liberty, 15-12. The Flames held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks. Burke tallied five saves for the Cavaliers in picking up his ninth win of the season. Kevin Mahan made five saves in 90 minutes for Liberty.

The Cavaliers return to action Friday night when they travel to No. 6 Duke at 7 p.m.
