DURHAM, N.C. – – Duke’s Joe Germanese scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute as the No. 6 Blue Devils (8-2-1, 3-1-1 ACC) defeated No. 3 Virginia, 2-1, Friday night at Koskinen Stadium. Yannick Reyering scored his seventh goal of the season for the Cavaliers, who fell to 11-2-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Reyering pulled the Cavaliers to a 1-1 tie when he knocked in his third penalty kick of the season in the 24th minute. The PK was set up when Adam Cristman was fouled in the box on a restart.

Duke had taken an early 1-0 lead when Tim Jepson scored in the 14th minute. Jepson was attempting to find the head of Chris Loftus, but his serve bounced into the goal from 30 yards out giving the Blue Devils the early lead.

Germanese blasted home his third goal of the season off a double pass from Loftus and Michael Videira.

The Cavaliers had a few chances in the final minutes of the game. Their last chance came when Nico Colaluca’s corner kick was cleared out by Duke Defenders to preserve their win.

Virginia and Duke each had nine shots in the game. UVa held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Ryan Burked tallied two saves for the Cavaliers while play all 90 minutes in goal. Duke goalkeeper Justin Papadakis recorded four saves for the Blue Devils.

The Cavaliers return to action Wednesday night when they host No. 2 Maryland at 7 p.m.
