Virginia Volleyball Falls To Duke 3-1

DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 (30-22, 30-25, 24-30, 30-22) loss to Duke Friday (Oct. 6) at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the loss, UVa falls to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Blue Devils improve to 12-3 overall, 5-0 in the ACC.
Fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) paced the Cavaliers with 15 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. Osco also had three blocks. First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) was the only other UVa player to reach double digits in kills as she had 13 while hitting a team-high .324. Dickson also added eight digs. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) added nine kills and led Virginia with seven blocks. Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) tallied eight kills and five blocks, including two solo stuffs.
Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) notched her third consecutive and sixth double-double of the season with 44 assists and a season-high 16 digs. Second-year libero Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) led UVa with 22 digs. Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) returned to the lineup after missing the last six matches and tallied 13 digs. Fourth-year Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station, Tenn.) rounded UVa’s five players in double figures in digs with 10.
Rachael Moss led Duke with match highs of 19 kills and 25 digs. Carrie DeMange added 14 kills, 21 digs and six blocks. Tealle Hunkus contributed 13 kills and 17 digs, while Ali Hausfeld totaled 57 assists and 15 digs. Jourdan Norman added 11 kills and a match-high eight blocks.
UVa hit only .119 in the match with 52 kills, while the Blue Devils hit .171 with 71 kills. Duke held a big 108-86 advantage in digs and a 15-12 edge in team blocks. The Blue Devils had four service aces and UVa posted three.
Duke took an early 12-3 lead in the first game and stretched the margin to 18-7 before winning 30-22. The Blue Devils took a 2-0 led with 30-25 win in game two. Duke jumped out to a 13-5 lead, but UVa closed to 18-15 on a Dickson kill, only to see the Blue Devils answer with the next two points. UVa closed the gap to three points on three occasions, including 28-25, but could never get closer. The Cavaliers led 24-16 in the third game, but Duke was able to close the gap to 26-24. Osco halted the Duke run with a kill and then after a Blue Devil attack error, she closed out the 30-24 win with back-to-back kills. The Cavaliers held an early lead in the fourth game, but Duke used a quick spurt to grab a 12-9 advantage and then increased its lead to 17-12 before winning 30-22 to close out the match.
Virginia wraps up its four-match road trip with a 6:00 p.m. contest Saturday (Oct. 7) against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
