Virginia Volleyball Serves Up 3-0 Win Over Miami

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team used a strong service game to record 11 aces in registering a 3-0 (31-29, 30-24, 30-15) victory over Miami Friday (Oct. 13) before 626 spectators at Memorial Gym. With the victory, the Cavaliers snapped a two-match losing streak and improve to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami drops to 6-11 overall and 3-5 in the ACC.
Fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) led UVa’s 11-service ace barrage with four and she also added seven kills, three assists, three blocks and two digs. Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) tallied three aces and also recorded nine kills, five digs and two blocks. Fourth-year defensive specialist Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station, Tenn.) contributed a pair of services aces, while fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) and first-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) both had one ace.
Dickson led all players with 14 kills while hitting .308 and had two blocks. Emily Kirkwood had an excellent performance with match-high 39 assists to go along with five digs and four kills in addition to the ace. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.), who leads the nation in blocks, added six to her season total to increase her average to 1.89 per game (117 blocks in 62 games). Oakes also joined Dickson in double figures in kills with 10. Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) hit .385 with eight kills and added two blocks. Second-year libero Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players with 10 digs.
Ciara Michel led Miami with nine kills and a match-high seven blocks. Frannie Savage led the Hurricanes with nine digs and added four kills.
After struggling in the attack percentage department the past two matches, Virginia bounced back by hitting a respectable .270 against Miami with 52 kills. The Hurricanes hit only .153 with 32 kills. UVa held an 11-1 advantage in service aces, while Miami led 39-30 in digs and 10-8 in team blocks.
The Cavaliers won the first game 31-29 with Dickson registering six of UVa’s 19 kills. Virginia led 26-20 and 29-25, but the Hurricanes battled back to tie the game at 29-29. Back-to-back kills by Dickson and Sarah Kirkwood sealed the game one win. In game two, Virginia registered six service aces in a 30-24 win. The Cavaliers took the lead for good, 4-3, on an Oakes kill. UVa closed out the victory by cruising to a 30-15 win in game three. Virginia hit .382 in the final frame while Miami’s attack percentage was -.130 (six kills and nine errors). Dickson drilled six kills in the game, including the final two of the contest.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 14) when it hosts Florida State at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
