Virginia Volleyball Falls To Florida State 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team suffered its first home loss of the season as Florida State hit an impressive .378 in a 3-0 (30-26, 30-27, 32-30) victory Saturday (Oct. 14) at Memorial Gym. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Florida State improves to 14-4 and 8-1 in the ACC.
UVa entered the match with a perfect 7-0 record at home and was also 4-0 in the ACC at Mem Gym this season. The Seminoles came into the match having won their last three matches and used a strong passing game to extend their winning streak and snap Virginia’s perfect home mark. Neither team led by more than four points during the entire match and there were a total of 32 ties during the match, including 14 in both the second and third games.
First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) led all players with 15 kills while hitting .371 and she also added a team-high three service aces. Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) was the only player in the match to record a double-double (her eighth of the season) as she had 13 kills and 10 digs to go along with four assists, one service ace and a block. Kirkwood hit .321 in the contest. Fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) and third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) both reached double figures in kills. Osco tallied 11 kills to go along with two blocks, while Oakes had 10 kills and a pair of blocks.
Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) handed out a match-high 51 assists for an impressive average of 17.0 per game. She also had three digs, two kills and a block. Third-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) had nine kills while hitting a team-high .412. She also led UVa with three blocks.
Jackie BonSalle and Brianna Barry led Florida State with 13 kills apiece. Barry hit .688 and added four blocks, while BonSalle hit .400. Makini Thompson had 11 kills and a match-best five service aces, while Sarah Griffin hit .692 with 10 kills and added six digs and three blocks. Setter Zrinka Tomic had 47 assists, six digs and three kills. Summer Weissing led all players with 13 digs.
UVa led Florida State in kills 60-56, but the Seminoles out-hit Virginia .378 to .316. Florida State also led 47-34 in digs, 7-5 in blocks and 6-4 in service aces. The Cavaliers also had 11 service errors in the match compared to just four for FSU.
Florida State hit an impressive .386 in winning the first game 30-26. Oakes led UVa with five kills, but the Seminoles held a 4-0 edge in blocks. Virginia had six more kills (21-15) than FSU in the second game and hit .405, but was on the short end of a 30-27 score. Osco and Sarah Kirkwood had seven and six kills, respectively. Florida State hit a sizzling .417 in winning the third game 32-30 to close out the victory.
The Cavaliers continue their four-match homestand on Friday (Oct. 20) when they host Clemson at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
