Virginia Volleyball Falls 3-0 To Duke

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke recorded an impressive .336 hitting percentage to register a 3-0 (30-23, 33-31, 30-23) win over the Virginia volleyball team Thursday evening (Nov. 16) before 713 spectators at Memorial Gym. With the victory, the Blue Devils clinch the Atlantic Coast Conference’s automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers had their eight-match winning streak snapped and fall to 21-7 overall and 14-5 in the ACC. Duke is now 25-3 overall and 18-1 in the conference.
Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) and first-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) led the Cavaliers with 11 kills apiece. Davis hit an impressive .450 in the match while adding two blocks. Dickson posted a .409 hitting percentage and also contributed two digs and a service ace. Third-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) rounded out the Cavaliers in double digits in kills with 10 and tied for team-high honors in digs with eight. Kirkwood also recorded one service ace to tie the school record of 160, which is also held by her older sister, fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.).
Emily Kirkwood tallied 38 assists, six digs and a block in the match. Third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) added seven kills and four blocks, including two solo stuffs. Fourth-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas) accounted for three of UVa’s six service aces in the match and increased her career total to 146, good for fourth on Virginia’s career aces list. Osco also added four kills, three digs, two blocks and two assists. Third-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) and second-year defensive specialist Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) both had eight digs.
Tealle Hunkus led Duke with 14 kills, nine digs and two aces. Rachel Moss had 13 kills, eight digs and three blocks, while Jourdan Norman tallied 11 kills, a .429 hitting percentage and four blocks. Sue Carls had 10 kills and led all players with a .562 hitting percentage. Setter Ali Hausfeld handed out 50 assists, while Jenny Shull notched 11 digs.
UVa hit .239 with 43 kills in the match compared to Duke’s 59 kills and .336 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils held a 47-40 advantage in digs, a 9-6 edge in team blocks and a slight 6-5 lead in aces.
The Blue Devils jumped out of the gates quickly as they registered a blistering 472 hitting percentage while winning the first game 30-23. Davis led UVa in game one with four kills. The Cavaliers nearly won game two, but Duke pulled out a 33-31 by taking advantage of seven UVa serving errors. A block by Duke’s Carrie DeMange and Rachel Moss with UVa leading 29-28 helped propel the Blue Devils to the win. Davis led UVa in the second game with six kills, while Kirkwood and Dickson both had four kills. Duke sealed the win with a 30-23 win in game three. The Blue Devils tallied 23 kills while hitting .336 in the third game. Dickson paced UVa with five kills. Virginia led 15-14 in the third game, but the Blue Devils won seven of the next 10 points to take a 21-18 lead.
Virginia concludes its home season with a 7:00 p.m. match against Wake Forest Friday (Nov. 17) evening. The match is the final contest at Mem Gym for fourth-years Emily Kirkwood, Lindsay Osco and Emily Perilli.
