Caponi Takes Title at Cleveland State Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio – – Fifteenth ranked Rocco Caponi captured the title at 184 pounds while fellow teammates Brent Fiorito and Brent Jones both placed at the Cleveland State Open over the weekend. Caponi went 4-0 and defeated Penn State’s Mike Ward, 8-0, in the finals.
Jones at 197 pounds and Fiorito at 165 pounds each finished fifth in the open after both going 4-1 due in the wrestleback format.
Caponi registered a 15-0 technical fall over Michigan’s Cody Waters before pinning Findlay’s Cody Reitmeier at 1:41. He earned a 7-0 decision over Central Michigan’s Eric Simaz. In the finals, Caponi shut out Ward, a former Ohio state champion, who is redshirting for the Nitany Lions.
Fiorito defeated Indiana’s Kyle Samuels, 6-2, before Penn State’s Jason Lapham edged him, 3-2. He later blanked Cleveland State’s Nate Kmetz, 3-0. Fiorito defeated Purdue’s Luke Manuel, 2-1. He decisioned Findlay’s Justin Shannon, 2-0, to take fifth place.
Jones’ first win of the open came over Easter Michigan’s Jake Wood, 11-6. He dropped a close match to Purdue’s Logan Brown, 5-3. Jones then won three consecutive matches over Kent State’s Tom Larosa, 9-3, Gannon’s Jacob Tazzi, 11-6 and Buffalo’s James Hamel. He pinned Hamel in eight seconds to take fifth place.
