CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s basketball took Boston College to overtime to pull out a 65-63 at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday afternoon before a boisterous crowd of 4,605 fans.

The Cavaliers improved to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, while the Eagles fell to 10-7 overall and 0-3 in the league. The overtime game, the first this season and the first at JPJA, is the 40th in UVa school history.The Cavaliers now stand 23-17 overall in extra innings.

BC opened the game with a 5-0 run before the `Hoos retaliated with a 10-0 run to take over the lead. Uva led by as many as six points, 21-15 with 7:41 to go in the stanza, but held just a one-point edge, 28-27, at intermission.

Virginia stormed out the locker room to start the second half with back-to-back three-pointers from senior Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) and junior Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.). UVa led by seven points, 46-39, before the Eagles tied the game at 47-47 after an 8-1 run with 6:03 remaining in regulation. The teams traded baskets until Zoll and McGuire once again nailed back-to-back treys, giving UVa a two point advantage, 55-53 with 2:21 to go. BC converted one of two free throw to trail by one before sophomore Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) tipped in a missed lay-up to give the Cavaliers a three-point lead, 57-53 with 32 second to play. BC’s Elisabeth Egnell nailed a three to tie the game at 57-57 and force overtime.

During the extra five minutes of play, Zoll added her third trey to go up 60-57. After a jumper by each team, BC’s Mickel Picco tied the game at 62-62 on a three-pointer. With 1:14 left in OT, freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) nailed a three-pointer that would be the game winner. BC then made one of two free throws for the game’s final score. The Eagles had the ball with 20 seconds on the clock, but turned it over following a jump ball situation. UVa ran out the final five seconds on the clock for the win.

Zoll paced Virginia with 16 points, including three treys. McGuire followed with 14 points, including four treys. Wright rounded out the double-figure scoring with 13 points and a game-high four steals. Senior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

Mickel led BC with 23 points, while Kathrin Ress added 16 points and a team-best nine boards. Kaydia Kentish finished with 10 points.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded BC, 34-31.

Virginia travels to No. 1 Maryland on Friday, Jan. 19 for a 7 p.m. game at the Comcast Center.
