Charlottesville, VA — The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2007 football schedules for the league’s 12 schools today. Virginia’s slate features 12 regular season games, including six home contests. The Cavaliers will play 11 consecutive Saturdays before an off week prior to the Virginia Tech game. Starting times for all games will be announced later.
For the second year in a row, and third time in the past four seasons, the Cavaliers will open on the road. Virginia travels to Wyoming to kickoff the season Sept. 1 in Laramie. It is the farthest west UVa has played since the 2004 MPC Computers Bowl in Boise. Last year Virginia defeated the Cowboys 13-12 at Scott Stadium in the first meeting between the two teams. The game marks just the second time Virginia has played at a Mountain West opponent. In 1999 the Cavaliers won at BYU 45-40.
Virginia starts ACC play the following week when it hosts Duke Sept. 8 in the home opener. Last year the Cavaliers shut out the Blue Devils 37-0 in Durham for their seventh straight victory against the Blue Devils.
The Cavaliers travel to North Carolina on Sept. 15 for the UVa’s first ACC road contest. The game will be Virginia’s first against three ACC teams featuring new head coaches. The 2007 season marks the debut of Butch Davis as the Tar Heels mentor. Last season Virginia blanked North Carolina 23-0 at Scott Stadium.
Virginia will host both teams that won the two ACC division starting Sept. 22 when Georgia Tech comes to Charlottesville. Last year the Yellow Jackets finished 9-5, won the Coastal Division and played in the Gator Bowl. Georgia Tech downed the Cavaliers 24-7 in Atlanta in a game that featured the debut of Jameel Sewell at quarterback for UVa.
The Cavaliers’ only back-to-back home series takes place the following week when Pittsburgh makes its first trip to Scott Stadium since 1953. Last year the Big East opponent defeated Virginia 38-13 in the season opener at Pitt.
Virginia travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn., Oct. 6 for its first meeting with Sun Belt Conference opponent Middle Tennessee State. Last season the Blue Raiders finished 7-6, shared the Sun Belt championship with a 6-1 record in league play, and played in the Motor City Bowl. The game will mark the first time an ACC opponent has visited Floyd Stadium.
The Cavaliers face off against Connecticut for the first time Oct. 13 in Charlottesville. The following week marks the first of two straight road games for UVa. The Cavaliers play at Maryland on Oct. 20 and then at NC State Oct. 27. Maryland finished 9-4 last season and appeared in the Citrus Bowl. The game in Raleigh will be the first time the Cavaliers face Tom O’Brien, a former Cavalier assistant coach, as the head coach for the Wolfpack. Last season UVa defeated NCSU 14-7 in Charlottesville.
ACC Champion Wake Forest returns to Scott Stadium for the first time since the 2003 season for a Nov. 3 date with the Cavaliers. Last year the Deacons won the ACC’s Atlantic Division, defeated Georgia Tech in the conference championship game and played in the Orange Bowl. The Deacons were 18th in the final AP poll.
The Cavaliers final road game takes place Nov. 10 at Miami. The Hurricanes finished 7-6 last year and won the MPC Computers Bowl. Miami will be under the direction of first-year coach Randy Shannon in 2007. Last season the Cavaliers defeated Miami 17-7 at home.
Virginia has an open date scheduled for Nov. 17 before wrapping up the regular season Nov. 24 against Virginia Tech on Senior Day. The Hokies finished 10-3 last year and played in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
