CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 4 Virginia men’s tennis team continued its season-opening winning streak by defeating No. 23 Michigan, 5-2, tonight at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia is now 6-0, while Michigan drops to 5-1 on the season.

“Treat [Huey] and Somdev [Devvarman] were elected captains this week and they really showed today what captains need to do,” said associate head coach Tony Bresky. “They went out there and took care of business and they both have been working very hard. Michigan is a much-improved team and they really pushed us. It was a great match-up for us going into next weekend. The crowd was inspiring and I really think that we are building a great fan base here.”

Virginia won the doubles point for the fifth time this season. At the No. 2 position, Ryan Heller and Andrew Mazlin defeated Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England), 8-5. Virginia proceeded to win the next two doubles matches via tiebreakers. At No. 3 doubles, the team of Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) bested George Navas and Mike Sroczynski 9-8(9). Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.), the No. 7 doubles team in the nation, followed that win by defeating the No. 2 ranked doubles team in Brian Hung and Matko Maravic, 9-8(2), at the No. 1 position.

Virginia followed up their doubles win by winning three of the next four singles matches to clinch the victory. At No. 2 singles, No. 10 Huey defeated Hung, 6-3, 6-3. Mazlin defeated Angelinos at the No. 5 position to put Michigan on the scoreboard, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, No. 8 Devvarman cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 44 Maravic. Singer ended any drama by clinching the match for the Cavaliers by defeating Steve Peretz, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Heller defeated Inglot at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6(5)-7, 10-4. In the final singles match, Barrick outlasted Navas, 7-5, 5-7, 7-4.

“I was extremely impressed with this Michigan team. I think they have a great program. [Michigan head coach] Bruce [Berque] and [assistant coach] Sean [Maymi] have done a great job,” said head coach Brian Boland. “I look forward to a great match next year when we travel to Michigan. It was an exciting tennis match and a great atmosphere. I want to thank all of the people who came out and supported us. It made for a great night of tennis. I think this win provides us with a good deal of momentum going into National Indoors, which will be a great challenge for us.”

The Cavaliers travel to Chicago next weekend to compete in the National Team Indoors Championship. They return home to face Pepperdine on Feb. 23 and Boise State on Feb. 24.
