Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia basketball team did not take long to shake off the effects of Saturday’s 84-57 loss at Virginia Tech by jumping out to a large early lead in a 90-49 win against Longwood. The victory raises the Cavaliers overall record to 17-7 while the Lancers fell to 8-19. The game was Virginia’s final non-conference contest of the season and improved the team’s home record at the John Paul Jones Arena to 13-1 heading into Saturday’s ACC matchup with Florida State.

Virginia was led by the backcourt scoring of guards Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds. Singletary had 19 points in 27 minutes while Reynolds contributed 11 points in 25 minutes of action. It was the 14th consecutive game the tandem both scored in double figures.

A total of five Cavaliers scored in double figures. Laurynas Mikalauskas had a season high 12 points, Mamadi Diane added 13 and Adrian Joseph contributed 11 points. Longwood was led in scoring by Maurice Sumter’s 15 points.

The Cavaliers raced out to a 12-0 lead as Singletary hit a pair of three-pointers and Reynolds added two field goals. Clayton Morgan converted a pair of free throws at 16:33 to finally get the Lancers on the scoreboard. Longwood did not make its first field goal for three more minutes after UVa had increased its lead to 22-2. The Lancers missed their first 11 field goal attempts at the start of the game.

Virginia led by as much as 25 points (37-12) en route to a 53-29 halftime lead. Singletary had 14 points at the break on four three-point field goals and a pair of free throws. All seven of Singletary’s first-half shots came from beyond the three-point line.

The Cavaliers shot a blistering 61.1 percent in the first half, converting 22 of 36 shots.

Virginia’s lead was never threatened in the second half as coach Dave Leitao managed to get all 15 players into the contest. The Cavaliers dominated the rebounding during the game, including the offensive glass. Virginia had 52 rebounds to 36 for the Lancers. The Cavaliers finished the game with 23 offensive boards. UVa blocked 12 shots and turned the ball over just 10 times in the victory.

Longwood converted just 16 of 62 shots and finished the game shooting 25.8 percent.

Virginia returns to ACC play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Florida State in the John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers are 8-3 in conference games while the Seminoles sported a 5-6 record heading into their game with Georgia Tech Tuesday in Tallahassee.
