CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia baseball team won its fifth game in as many days, topping Coppin State 12-0 Wednesday afternoon at Davenport Field. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 7-1 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-4.

“Baseball is sometimes a crazy game,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “We didn’t hit that many balls hard today. What this game showed us, and them, is that if you throw strikes, you have a chance to win. We did that today and they didn’t and that was the difference. It is nice to have this five-game stretch done, but I thought our guys did a good job of coming to park with a business-like attitude every day and handled it well.”

Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), and Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) led the Cavalier offense by each going 2-for-3 on the day. Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) and Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) also had two hits a piece for Virginia.

First-year Neal Davis (Baltimore, Md.) got his first career win on the mound, allowing no runs on just one hit over three innings of work. Fellow first-year Brad Grove (Glen Allen, Va.) made his first career appearance, pitching three perfect innings of relief. Shane Warren (Alexandria, Va.) preserved the shutout in the seventh inning.

Eagles starter Drew Boyer took the loss, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on six hits in four innings of work.

Virginia took control of the game with six runs in the bottom of the first. After the first three batters reached to load the bases, Farrell hit a single that drove in Cannon and Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) for the first two runs. A throwing error on Wingfield’s groundout scored Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.). John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) drove in Farrell on a fielder’s choice groundout. Later in the inning Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) walked to load the bases, before Cannon and Henry each drew bases loaded walks to drive in the fifth and sixth runs of the inning.

The Cavaliers added two in the bottom of the third. Mitchell singled and Cannon walked with one out, and a wild pitch brought them into scoring position. Later in the inning Mitchell scored on a groundout and Cannon scored on an error.

In the bottom of the fourth, Virginia made the score 10-0. Wingfield singled and Scaglione walked to open the inning. After a fielder’s choice put Wingfield at third and Greg Lamp (Houston. Texas) at first, consecutive wild pitches scored Wingfield and moved Lamp to third. Mitchell drove in Lamp with an RBI single.

Virginia added two final runs in the bottom of the sixth. Scaglione reached on a fielder’s choice and Will Campbell (Yorktown, Va.) singled in his first at-bat of his career. After a fielder’s choice put Scaglione on third and Mitchell at first, Cannon drove in Scaglione with a single. Henry’s double brought in Mitchell for the final run of the day for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers will continue its homestand this weekend, as they host Bucknell. First pitch at Davenport Field is slated for 4 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
