Virginia Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Bucknell

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia baseball team remained perfect at home this season as it won both ends of a doubleheader with Bucknell Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers took game one 3-0 and won the nightcap 13-2
“We came today with the focus needed to win a doubleheader,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “In the first game Jacob Thompson threw a great first game. He kept us in it until we could scratch a few runs late. Then Matt Packer had quality start and our bats game through with 13 runs.”
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when the Cavaliers scored one run. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) hit a leadoff double and scored as Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) and Ryan Hudson (Tampa, Fla.) followed with singles. In the seventh, Virginia added two more. Guyer hit his third double of the day to drive in Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.), who had driven in Greg Miclat (Concord, N.J.) earlier in the inning.
The Cavalier pitching staff posted its third consecutive shutout, led by starter Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.). Thompson pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. Alex Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out the only batter he faced before Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) got the final five outs, four by strike out, to record his first save of the season.
Guyer went 3-for-4 in game one, while Hudson was 2-for-3. Each had an RBI in the opener.
In game two, Virginia jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings. The Cavaliers were ahead 7-2 before a six-run seventh pushed the score to 13-2, the eventual final margin. It marked the sixth time in eight home games this season that Virginia scored double digit runs.
Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, to record his second win of the season (2-0). Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) and Robert Poutier (Yorktown, Va.) combined to throw 3.1 innings of shutout relief, allowing only two hits.
Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) and Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) each went 3-for-4 in game two to lead the Cavaliers offensively. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) went 2-for-3, while Miclat had three RBIs in the nightcap.
The Cavaliers’ 12-game homestand continues on Tuesday when they host VMI. First pitch at Davenport Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
