CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team improved to 12-1 on the season, and scored their first ACC victory, with a pair of wins Wednesday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers defeated No. 36 Old Dominion, 5-2, and then downed No. 53 Maryland 5-2 in the nightcap.

In a tight morning match against Old Dominion (7-3), the Cavaliers swept the doubles contests. At the No. 1 position, juniors Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) defeated No. 48 Henrique Cancado and Harel Srugo, 8-4. The team of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) downed Aleksandr Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi, 8-4. Completing the sweep was Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece), who bested Rodrigo Souza and Yakov Diskin, 8-4.

The Monarchs scored victories in the first two completed singles matches before the Cavaliers won the next three to seal the contest. Devvarman, Huey, Angelinos, and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) all scored three set victories over an upset-minded Old Dominion squad.

Against the Terrapins (5-1), Virginia won the doubles point for the eleventh time this season. In their first ACC match, Devvarman and Huey maintained their strong play at No. 1 doubles by besting David Kwon and Boris Fetbroyt, 8-1. Barrick and Inglot defeated Trey Taylor and Andy Orban, 8-6, at the No. 2 position to clinch the opening point for the Cavaliers.

In the singles matches, Virginia’s captains came through for their first ACC victory of the season. Tri-captains Devvarman, Huey, and Miklo all scored straight set victories to seal the win for the Cavaliers. Barrick was also a winner in a third set superbreaker against Scott Fink.Virginia next travels to Cambridge, Mass. for another doubleheader against Harvard and Boston College this Friday. Match time is noon for Harvard and 6 p.m. for Boston College.
