CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team has received a National Letter of Intent from Kristen London (Decatur, Ga.), head coach Debbie Ryan announced on Tuesday.
A 5-10 guard from Chamblee Charter High School, London is a two-year college transfer from Seminole State College in Seminole, Okla., where she averaged 13.3 points and 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore. She helped the Belles to a 25-6 record en route to second-team All-Bi-State Conference honors. London played her freshman year at Pensacola (Fla.) Junior College.
“We’re very pleased and happy that Kristen will join our program,” Ryan said. “She is a player that will add athleticism and experience to the guard position.”
One of seven children, London is the daughter of Mike London, the defensive coordinator for the Cavalier football team. Kristen London was born in Virginia but lived with her mother in Decatur, Ga., where she attended high school.
“It was actually the easiest decision I have ever had to make,” said Kristen London, who will have two years of eligibility remaining. “Since my dad is at Virginia, it wasn’t that hard. I wanted to go to Virginia ever since my dad first took a job at Virginia. It was a little girl’s dream really. I was definitely excited.”
“Words cannot describe the feelings I have for my daughter’s opportunities here at Virginia,” Mike London said. “Her dreams of playing at UVa are finally realized. My dream of seeing her play and being active in her life are overwhelming.”
London joins Kelly Hartig (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), who signed during the early signing period, as Virginia’s Class of 2011. Hartig is the younger sister of Virginia forward Jayna Hartig.
