Seabury Hit in 10th Leads No. 3 Virginia Baseball to 3-2 Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) singled home Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) with the winning run in the 10th inning to propel the No. 3 Virginia baseball team to a 3-2 win over Maryland Saturday at Davenport Field.
“Beau Seabury is a great leader for us,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “He battled (Brett) Cecil, who is one of the top pitchers in the country. Beau battled him to two strikes and put one in play and it worked out for us. It feels good to win the series after two ballgames, but I challenged the team after the game that to be a championship team, we have to win three games.”
Marsh led off the 10th with a single and moved up on a Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk to Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.), David Adams (Margate, Fla.) grounded out to move Marsh to third. Seabury then lined a Cecil offering down the left-field line, where diving third baseman Mike Murphy knocked the ball down but could not corral it, allowing Marsh to score the winning run.
Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) earned the win and moved to 3-3 on the season after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Cecil (5-4) tossed 2 2/3 innings and was saddled with the defeat.
Adams led the Virginia offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Seabury finished 2-for-5. Murphy and Jon Greenwich each had two hits for Maryland (23-23, 7-16 ACC).
Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) started and pitched into the sixth inning for Virginia (36-10, 15-7) before being lifted for Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.). Packer went five innings, giving up two runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Schwimer worked out of a major jam in the sixth. After runners reached second and third with no out, Schwimer stranded both to keep the score at 2-2.
Casey Baron had a strong start for Maryland, going seven innings while giving up two runs, seven hits and two walks. He did not strike out a batter.
Maryland took the lead in the second inning on Joe Palumbo single, but Virginia rallied with a run in the bottom of the inning when Guyer crossed the plate as Seabury grounded into a double play.
The Cavaliers moved ahead in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Doolittle. Maryland knotted the score in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Nick Jowers.
The teams conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
