CHARLOTTESVILLE – Dr. Danny Mistry, co-medical director of Virginia’s sports medicine program, has been selected to serve two weeks as a team physician at the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
As a team physician, Dr. Mistry is responsible for the medical care of all athletes, coaches and guests residing at the Olympic Training Center. He will work with athletes from several sports, including disabled athletes training for the Paralympics. He is scheduled to work at the Olympic Training Center from June 11-26.
Dr. Mistry has traveled with various men’s and women’s soccer U.S.A. national teams as an athletics trainer and massage therapist for the U.S. Soccer Federation. He is also a team physician for the U.S.A. Swimming and Diving teams.
“I am looking forward to working with the athletes, especially the disabled athletes,” Dr. Mistry said. “This is another opportunity for me to learn and grow. I’m hopeful this two-week rotation will enable me to travel with other national teams in the future.”
Dr. Mistry has served as co-medical director of Virginia’s sports medicine program since June of 2003 and has served as a primary care physician for the Virginia athletics department for the last five years. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Department of Internal Medicine and the Curry School of Education at UVa.
Dr. Mistry joined the full-time athletics medical staff at Virginia after completing his residency training at the University of Virginia Health System. He was a resident in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation between June 1995 and June 1997 and in Internal Medicine between July 1997 and June 2002, during which time he spent three years as a research fellow in cardiovascular physiology. He also worked with the UVa athletics medical staff during his residency.
Dr. Mistry’s involvement at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista is part of the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC) Volunteer Medical Program. The program serves as the first step in the evaluation process for selection to USOC competitive events like the World University Games, Pan American Games, Paralympic Games and Olympic Games. On an annual basis, approximately 25-30 doctors and 90 certified athletic trainers participate in the program. One physician and one to four certified athletic trainers are usually assigned each two-week period in Chula Vista.
The Olympic Training Center at Chula Vista officially opened in June of 1995 on a 150-acre complex adjacent to Lower Otay Lake in San Diego County. The center has sport venues and support facilities for nine Olympic sports including archery, canoe/kayak, cycling, field hockey, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field.
