Charlottesville, VA – First-year coach Kim Lewellen jumpstarts her career as the Virginia women’s golf coach this week when the Cavaliers open their fall season at the Topy Copy at Tanagura Country Club in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The Cavaliers are one of two American university teams competing in the three-day, 54 hole tournament that runs Tuesday through Thursday. Denver is also in the field against a field of Japanese university teams.

Virginia is ranked No. 23 in the National Golf Coaches Association preseason poll while Denver is 18th after placing 20th at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

The Cavaliers lineup will feature juniors Jennie Arseneault, Lene Krog and Carly Truitt, senior Kristen Simpson and sophomore Whitney Neuhauser. Arseneault is UVa’s leading returning golfer having posted a 74.61 stroke average last season. She returns to the lineup after missing the postseason due to a sore back. Krog will be playing her first tournament for the Cavaliers after transferring from East Carolina where Lewellen was the head coach. Krog led East Carolina last year with a 75.69 stroke average and qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing ninth at the East Regional.

The Topy Cup also includes a men’s tournament that features Clemson, Stanford (the defending NCAA Champions), Alabama and Duke in a 12-team field.
