SAN DIEGO – The Virginia volleyball team (4-4) was beaten by No. 18 San Diego 3-1 Saturday in its second match of the USD Invitational. UVa will take on UC Santa Barbara later this evening (8 p.m. ET) in the final match of the tournament.

The Toreros beat UVa 30-27 and 30-18 in the first two games, respectively. The Cavaliers came back to win game three, 30-26, but fell 30-19 in the final game. The win moved San Diego’s record to 4-3 on the year.

Fourth year Melissa Caldwell led Virginia with 18 digs while classmate Sarah Kirkwood added 17 digs and a team-best 16 kills. Second year Lauren Dickson added 11 kills while Katie Oakes and Kendahl Voelker had eight apiece. Marlow Bruneau converted 29 assists for the Cavaliers.

Virginia recorded a .119 hitting percentage in the loss, while the Toreros hit .280. USD was led by Amy DeGroot, whose 19 kills led the team’s four players with double-figure kills. Andrea Csaszi had a game-high 27 digs. The Toreros also posted 15 team blocks compared to 10 for UVa.
