CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 9 ranked Virginia men’s soccer team returned home Sunday and scored a 1-0 overtime victory over St. John’s at Klckner Stadium. Ross LaBauex’s (Chicago, Ill.) goal in the 97th minute lifted the Cavaliers to their fourth win of the season.

“We knew we would be in for a battle today,” said head coach George Gelnovatch. “It was probably going to be a one-goal game and we kept getting chances weren’t able to finish. In overtime, Chris (Tierney) hit a cross to the far post and Ross was fresh and able to get on the end of it.”

The Cavaliers (4-1-0) outshot the Red Storm (2-3-1) 13-3 in regulation, but neither team, could find the back of the net. Seven minutes into overtime, Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) hit a cross that LaBaeux headed just past the reach of St. John’s goalkeeper Neal Kitson for his first career goal.

In addition to outshooting St. John’s 15-3, the Cavaliers had a 5-0 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made two saves to record his third shutout of the season. Kitson made six saves for the Red Storm.
