College Park, MD Depsite outshooting and outcornering the nation’s top-ranked team, the No. 13/19 Cavaliers fell to No. 1/2 Maryland 4-0 today in College Park. The Cavaliers (5-5, 0-2 ACC) had 13 shots to Maryland’s 10 and drew four corners to the Terps’ three. Maryland (11-0, 3-0 ACC) got goals from four different players in the victory.

While the two teams were nearly statistically even in the first 35 minutes, it was Maryland who took the lead in the fifth minute of play as Nicole Muracco scored on the rebound of a short corner at 4:24. It was the Terrapins’ first trip to Virginia’s defensive circle in the game. That goal stood up as the only marker in the first half and Maryland led 1-0 on the scoreboard and had a slight edge in short corner (2-1) and shots (4-3).

In the second half the Cavaliers took 10 shots to Maryland’s six and drew four corners to the Terps’ one, but Maryland was able to capitalize, scoring three times in the second frame as Sarah Scholl scored on a breakaway at 42:54, Janneke van Leeuwen scored on a rebound of a short corner at 49:27, and Ameliet Rischen scored on a broken corner at 58:08. Devon Burnley made three saves for Virginia while Kathryn Masson and Alicia Grater both made four saves for the Terps.

Virginia returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 4 as the Cavaliers host the Bears of California. Game time is 6 p.m. at University Hall Turf Field.
