Notre Dame, IN Cavalier men’s golfer Greg Carlin had never broken 70 in a tournament entering his senior season at Virginia. That streak is now over. Carlin shot 3-under 67 during the final round of Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic to tie for second in the 54-hole event at even par 210. Behind Carlin’s play, the Cavaliers managed to climb to fourth on the leaderboard with a final score of 28-over 868. UVa shot 280 during Tuesday’s final round, the second best team score of the day.

Carlin’s finish was his best as a collegiate and marked his fourth career top-10 outing. His previous best tournament finish was his third-place effort at last year’s Cavalier Classic. His final score of 210 was seven shots better than any previous tournament performance.

Carlin and Notre Dame’s Doug Fortner shared runner-up honors behind Michigan State’s Ryan Brehm, who took medalist honors with a score of 5-under 205. Michigan State, ranked 25th, cruised to the team title with a score of 7-over 847. Lamar, ranked 17th, and Arkansas tied for second at 861.

Kyle Stough was UVa’s second highest finisher at 25th with a score of 9-over 219. He shot even par 70 Tuesday. Conrad Von Borsig and Amory Davis both carded 72s during the final round. Von Borsig placed 9th at 220 and Davis was 36th at 221. Henry Smart shot 71 and was 40th at 223.

The Cavaliers return to action Oct. 12-14 when they compete at The Ridges in Johnson City, Tenn.
