CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Blue Team captured the first series of the 2007 Orange and Blue World Series with a 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Orange Team Sunday night. The Blue, coached by assistant coach Karl Kuhn, won the series 2-1. The teams start the second three-game series at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Dan Grovatt (Tabernacle, N.J.) hit the game-winning single to left field on a hit and run to score Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) in the 10th inning and give the Blue Team the victory.
The Blue team scored once in the third inning on a Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) single to plate John Weaver (Lexington, Ky.). The Blue added another running in the following inning on a bloop RBI single from J.C. Poma (Glen Allen, Va.) which scored John Barr (Ivyland, Pa.).
The Orange team did all of its damage in the sixth inning against Tyler Wilson (Midlothian, Va.) and Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.). David Adams (Margate, Fla.) brought Robert Morey (Virginia Beach, Va.) home with a single to cut the lead to 2-1. After a pitching change to bring in Schwimer, Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) grounded out to bring in Tyler Biddix (Richmond, Va.) and tie the score. Wingfield followed with a single to center field to score Adams and give the Orange a 3-2 advantage.
The Blue rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra frames. Poma doubled to lead off and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Weaver. Will Campbell (Yorktown, Va.) then singled on new reliever Kevin Arico’s (Flemington, N.J.) first pitch to knot the score at three.
The World Series consists of seven games. Games 4-6 will be a separate series from the first three games. Game 7 will be the deciding game if the teams split the first two series. Admission to all games is free to the public.
