CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Blue Team scored a run in the fifth inning, then two in the sixth on a two-run double by John Weaver (Lexington, Ky.) to rally from an early 1-0 deficit and win Game 5 of the Orange and Blue World Series, 3-2, Thursday at Davenport Field. The Blue evens the second three-game series at a game apiece.

Blue pitchers Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.), Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) and Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) combined on a six-hitter while striking out a dozen batters. Packer fired five innings in his starting assignment, allowing just a run, four hits and a walk while striking out three. Rule (2-0) tossed three scoreless innings and fanned six, while Schwimer struck out the side in the ninth inning to notch the save.

The Orange Team received a strong pitching performance by the freshman tandem of Sean Tierney (Moseley, Va.) and Kevin Arico (Flemington, N.J.). Tierney allowed just an unearned run and five hits over five innings, while Arico (0-1) pitched three innings, giving up two runs and four hits while striking out four.

The Orange’s David Adams (Margate, Fla.) continued his torrid hitting in the series with a 2-for-4 performance. Phil Gosselin (West Chester, Pa.) and Dan Grovatt (Tabernacle, N.J.) each had two hits for the Blue.

The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) grounded into a double play, scoring Adams. The Blue tied the score in the fifth inning on a Gosselin double to plate Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.)

The Blue grabbed the lead in the sixth inning on Weaver’s double to score J.C. Poma (Glen Allen, Va.) and John Barr (Ivyland, Pa.).

The Orange scored a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Farrell.

The teams return to the field for Game 6 at 2:15 p.m. Monday.
