CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia volleyball player Sarah Kirkwood was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

This is the third Academic All-District nod for Kirkwood, who also garnered ESPN The Magazine first team Academic All-America accolades as a third year in 2006 and second team honors as a second year in 2005. She was the first volleyball player in program history to earn the national honor.

Kirkwood, who is living on the Lawn for the 2007-08 academic year, is pursing a degree in biology at UVa.

On the court, Kirkwood has set program records for career kills, service aces and attack attempts this season. She is a American Volleyball Coaches Association honorable mention All-American and a three-time All-ACC and AVCA All-East performer.

Kirkwood is now a finalist for the Academic All-America award, which will be announced Nov. 28.

The Virginia volleyball team (15-10, 10-6 ACC) plays tonight at NC State. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
