CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The Virginia volleyball team (16-11, 11-7 ACC) fell at North Carolina 3-1 Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Game scores were 25-30, 12-30 and 19-30. Fourth year Sarah Kirkwood paced Virginia with 13 kills and 19 digs.

Shannon Davis and Tara Hester each chipped in six kills to aid the Virginia offensive attack. Rookie Kelly Irvin added 28 assists on the night.

Hester’s 21 digs led the Cavaliers. Melissa Caldwell added 15 and A.J. Cushman tallied 14.

Virginia hit just .083 for the match, including a .021 percentage in the second game and .056 in the third game. North Carolina, meanwhile, hit .248 in the winning effort, and in contrast hit .333 in game two.

Lauren Prussing led North Carolina (13-13 9-8 ACC) with 13 kills and Brianna Eskola finished with a match-best 34 digs in the winning effort.

The Tar Heels also registered 13 blocks on the night compared to 4.5 swats for the Cavaliers.

Virginia returns to action at Maryland next Friday. Match time is set for 5 p.m. in College Park, Md.
