CARY, N.C. Virginia defeated NC State in the first round of the ACC Tournament, 4-1, Tuesday afternoon at the SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C. Chris Tierney converted two penalty kicks and Jonathan Villanueva and Matt Mitchell added goals for the Cavaliers, who will face No. 1 seed Boston College Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Select.
“Our goal was to win the game and advance, and we accomplished that,” head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We showed determination and played well.”

Tierney converted the first of his two penalty kicks in the ninth minute for his fifth goal of the season and what would prove to be the game-winner.
Mitchell found the back of the net in the 61st minute after gathering a punt from goalkeeper Dan Lousignau and finishing a breakaway. Louisignau earned the assist, the first of his career.
NC State (6-9-3) was whistled for another foul in the penalty box in the 66th minute, and Tierney stepped up and converted his second PK of the game for his sixth goal of the year.
