Virginia vs. Virginia Tech Postgame Notes
Today’s national anthem ended with a flyover featuring F-18 Jets. The pilots of those jets were graduates of either Virginia or Virginia Tech. They are:

Prior to today’s kickoff member of the Virginia and Virginia Tech chapters of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) presented a check to the V Foundation for Cancer Research for $35,200. Fiji members from the two schools ran a football from Blacksburg to Charlottesville starting Friday morning. During the five years since the two chapters have worked on the annual project, they have raised approximately $160,000. A total of 55 members of the two fraternities took part in the ball run.
Senior Salute: A total of 19 UVa seniors were honored prior to the start of today’s game. That list includes: Allen Billyk, Pete Bladel, Ian-Yates Cunningham, Scott Deke, Jermaine Dias, Chris Gorham, Chris Gould, Jamaal Jackson, Tony Konstant, Jordy Lipsey, Chris Long, Nate Lyles, Bernie McKeever, John Roberts, Gordie Sammis, Tom Santi, Jonathan Stupar, Ryan Weigand and Josh Zidenberg.
When Virginia took a 14-13 lead during the second quarter of today’s game it marked the first time UVa has led the Hokies in a game since owning a 7-0 in the third quarter of the 2004 matchup.
Virginia junior cornerback Chris Cook recorded his first interception of the season today. It was the third of his career.
Virginia junior linebacker Clint Sintim had three first-half sacks better his previous best single-game sack total. He had two sacks vs. Wyoming in 2006. Sintim has eight sacks this season after entering the season with seven in his career. His eight sacks are the most for a UVa linebacker since Kai Parham had nine in 2005.
Sintim is the first UVa linebacker to have three sacks in a game since Parham had three vs. Syracuse in 2005.
Virginia rushed for three touchdowns this afternoon, the second-highest total allowed by the Hokies this year (4 vs. LSU). It is the first time UVa had rushed for so many TDs vs. the Hokies since running for three in 2003.
The Cavaliers’ 144 yards passing today are their most in the series since a 358-yard performance in 2003, while the Hokies’ 299 yards are their most in series history (topping a 292-yard performance in 1988).
Tech’s blocked punt in the third quarter is the first time the Hokies’ blocked a UVa punt since 2002.
Mikell Simpson caught six passes (for 17 yards) to increase his season total to 38 receptions (366 yards). His 38 catches are the most by a UVa running back since Alvin Pearman caught 63 in 2003.
Simpson’s 81 yards rushing are the most by a Cavalier in the series since Pearman ran for 147 yards in 2004.
Jon Copper (11), Jeffrey Fitzgerald (10), and Clint Sintim (10) all had double digit tackles today. Sintim tied his season high, while Copper and Fitzgerald had their second-highest total of the season.
Virginia’s six sacks are the Cavaliers’ most vs. Virginia Tech since having six sacks in the 1998 game.
Jonathan Stupar caught three passes in the game and now has 77 career receptions. He is the sixth tight end in school history to catch at least 75 passes.
QB Jameel Sewell becomes the 10th player in school history to pass for 2000 yards in a season. His 2098 yards are 11th most in school history. Sewell’s 2339 yards of total offense are ranked 13th in school history.
Chris Long was in on two sacks today (1 solo, 1 shared), his fourth multisack game of the year. He now has 14 sacks this season (13 solo, 1 assist), tied with Chris Slade (1991) for third in school history. Slade (1992) and Patrick Kerney (1998) share the record with 15 sacks.
