Over the past five years the ACC has seen a record 33 of its schools receive post-season invitations and that includes in 2005 and 2006 when a record eight ACC schools enjoyed Bowl trips. Over the past five years, ACC teams have posted an impressive 21-12 record in Bowl appearances, twice winning the Bowl Challenge Cup, symbolic of the best winning percentage by any conference in football post season play. This year the Conference will have as many or more quality choices for post-season bowl games than ever before in its history. The Selection Process for these games is the result of a true partnership between the ACC and its Bowl Partners. Each Bowl makes its own selection with regard to the criteria it believes is important for its game. The Bowl has the financial responsibility for this process and each Bowl also has a responsibility to its own community to create the best possible game for its city. Although each Conference’s Bowl Selection Process has its own unique specifics, the flexibility in the ACC Selection Procedure is mirrored by virtually every major Conference in the country. Avoiding regular season rematches and consecutive appearances in the same bowl game are two of several situations that require this flexibility. After the BCS makes its selection(s), the Chick-fil-A Bowl has the next choice of ACC teams, followed by the Gator Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl. If each of these bowls does not select the team available with the best Conference record, then they must select a team that is within one win of the team available with the best Conference record. The bowls may also select another team, regardless of its Conference record, if it is ranked more than five spaces ahead of the ACC team available with the best Conference record in the Final BCS Standings. As an example if the Chick-fil-A Bowl were to pass on a team with a 6-2 record in the ACC, it could only do so by choosing a team with no less than a 5-3 conference record. It could not choose a team that was 4-4, unless that team was ranked more than five spaces above the team with a 6-2 record in the final BCS Standings. This “one-win” selection formula applies to all bowls that are affiliated with the ACC for the next four years, through the end of the 2009 football season. The Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta, Ga. (Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN) has the first selection of ACC teams after the BCS. The team chosen must be within one conference victory of the remaining, highest-ranked ACC team or be ranked more than five spaces ahead of the ACC team with the best Conference record available in the Final BCS Standings . Opponent is the Southeastern Conference’s third or fourth pick after the BCS. The Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. (Jan. 1, 1 p.m. ET on CBS) has the second selection of ACC teams after the BCS commitments are fulfilled. If not the next available team in the ACC standings, then must be within one conference win of the second-place team or be ranked more than five spaces ahead of the ACC team with the best Conference record available in the Final BCS Standings. The opponent is the third selection out of the Big 12 Conference after the BCS Selections have been made (two years) or the first available Big East team (two years) after the BCS selections or Notre Dame. The Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla. (Dec. 28, 5 p.m. ET on ESPN) has the third pick of ACC teams after the BCS. If not the next available team in the ACC standings, then the team must be within one conference win of the available team with the best Conference record, or be ranked more than five spaces ahead of the ACC team with the best Conference record available in the Final BCS Standings. The opponent is from the Big 10 Conference and is their third or fourth selection after the BCS. The Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tn. (Dec. 31, 4 pm ET on ESPN);
If the order is used to determine selection then if the bowl selecting does not choose the next available team in the ACC standings, the bowl must choose a team within one conference win of the ACC team available with the best Conference record. The bowl could also choose an ACC team that is ranked more than five spaces ahead of the ACC team with the best Conference record available in the Final BCS Standings. The opponent for the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl will be the fifth selection of teams after the BCS from the Southeastern Conference. The opponent for Meineke Car Care Bowl will be the second selection of Big East teams after the BCS Selections. The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho (Dec. 31, 2:00 p.m., ET on ESPN2) has the seventh pick of ACC teams after the BCS. If the Humanitarian Bowl does not select the ACC team available with the best Conference record, it must select a team within one win of the ACC team available with the best Conference record. Also, the Humanitarian could take a team ranked more than five spaces ahead of the ACC team available with the best Conference record. The opponent is either the champion, or the second choice of teams in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The ACC Divisional Champion which does not win the ACC Dr Pepper Championship Game is guaranteed to be selected by one of four bowl games from among the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the Gator Bowl, the Champs Sports Bowl or the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, unless the team has less than eight wins. |
