CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA The Virginia football team has accepted an invitation to play Texas Tech from the Big 12 Conference in the 2008 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 1. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally by CBS.

The Cavaliers are 9-3 overall this season and ranked 20th in the latest USA Today/Coaches Poll and 21st in this week’s Associated Press poll. This is UVa’s fifth bowl appearance under head coach Al Groh and 17th overall. Texas Tech is 8-4 this season, including a 4-4 record in the Big 12 Conference.

This is Virginia’s second appearance in the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl. The Cavaliers lost to Oklahoma 48-14 in the 1991 Gator Bowl. The game marks the fourth time Virginia has played in a January 1 bowl contest. The previous appearances were for the 1990 Citrus Bowl , the 1991 Sugar Bowl and the 1994 Carquest Bowl.

“The offer of a bid to participate in the 2008 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl is exciting and is the type acknowledgement that comes from a successful regular season,” said Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage. “The coaching staff and players have done a great job in 2007 showing their character and work-ethic. Those qualities will again be shown in the bowl game. Our goal is to get our fans equally excited about the game and that they will support the team by attending the January 1 game in Jacksonville.”
