Dallas, TX – Virginia senior defensive end Chris Long was named to The Football Writers Association of America 64th All-America team today.

The FWAA is the sixth All-American team to name Long to its first-team. He previously was named to teams announced by the American Football Coaches Association, the Walter Camp Football Foundation, The Sporting News, CBSSports.com and Rivals.com.

Long has earned consensus All-America status by being named to more than half of the national organizations recognized by the NCAA. The WCFF, TSN, WFAA and AFCA are four of the five teams the NCAA recognizes. The other is The Associated Press, which will announce its All-America team next week.

Sunday long will appear at the Lott Trophy Award banquet in Newport Beach, Calif. as one of the finalist for that honor. The Lott Trophy recognizes the college football Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The student-athlete is judged on both his on-field performance and his off-field performance. The other finalists are Glenn Dorsey of LSU, James Laurinaitis of Ohio State and J Leman of Illinois.

Long is the 11th Cavalier named a consensus All-American and the first since guard Elton Brown and tight end Heath Miller were named in 2004.

The ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year, Long leads the ACC and is third in the country in sacks (14.0). This sack total equaled or surpassed the total recorded by 10 NCAA teams. Long also leads the conference with 19.0 tackles-for-loss (tied for 10th nationally). One-quarter of Long’s 75 tackles this season were made behind the line of scrimmage.
