CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia head softball coach Eileen Schmidt has announced that fourth-year Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) and fifth-year Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal) will serve as team captains for the 2008 season.

The 2008 captains were voted on by members of the team.

“Whitney and Meghan are very well-balanced individuals,” Schmidt said. “They are successful in all areas of their lives, on and off the field. It is easy for the underclassmen to look up to them.”

Holstun played in 51 games last season for the Cavaliers and made 17 starts, 10 of which came in the circle. Holstun compiled a 6-6 record in 25 appearances and finished with a 4.86 ERA. The California native could see some time at first base this season in addition to her pitching duties.

O’Leary played in all 56 games a year ago and made 54 starts, mostly in center field, for the Cavaliers. The Louisiana native was second on the squad in runs scored (22) and also registered the fourth-highest batting average (.270) last season.

The Cavaliers return 10 letterwinners from the 2007 season and are under the direction of Schmidt, who is in her first season at UVa.

Virginia opens the 2008 campaign Feb. 15 at the Kajikawa Classic, hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
