CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia volleyball players Melissa Caldwell and Sarah Kirkwood were honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Monday. Kirkwood was tabbed the player of the year in the state of Virginia and Caldwell was named to the VaSID all-state second team.

Kirkwood collected honorable mention All-America accolades over the weekend and also was a first-team All-ACC pick this season. The Tampa, Fla., native led Virginia with 4.51 kills per game and was second on the squad with 3.50 digs per game. She closed her career at UVa as the program’s all-time leader in kills, attack attempts and service aces.

Caldwell, a Houston native, was named to the second team after leading Virginia with 4.51 digs per game. She also leaves her mark in the Cavalier record book as the program’s all-time leader in career digs.

Liberty coach Shane Pinder was honored as the VaSID coach of the year while Virginia Tech’s Felicia Willoughby was named rookie of the year.
