CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia softball team (0-5) will be in search of its first win of the season when the Cavaliers head to Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend for the inaugural Tennessee Classic. Virginia will play two games Friday, two games Saturday and one game Sunday before heading back to Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers are coming off their opening-weekend tournament, the Kajikawa Classic. Virginia unfortunately went 0-5 at the event, but lost two one-run games to Oklahoma State in extra innings (10-9) and to then-25th-ranked Oregon State (7-6).

Fourth-year Lindsey Preuss and third-year Carly Winger led Virginia at the plate last weekend, each contributing six hits. Sarah Tacke’s grand slam against Oklahoma State helped her tally a team-best six RBI as well.

Pitchers Karla Wilburn and Whitney Holstun each made two starts in the circle for UVa, while newcomer Allee Rife started her first career game on the final day of the tournament.

In Knoxville, Virginia will battle host and fifth-ranked Tennessee (9-1) twice over the course of the weekend. The Cavaliers kick off the event with a game against Louisiana-Monroe (4-5) at 2 p.m. Friday before taking on the Lady Vols at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, UVa is set to play Brigham Young (7-3) at 10 a.m. and Wagner, which is opening its season, at noon. Virginia concludes the tournament with a second game vs. Tennessee at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tennessee’s brand new Sherri Parker Lee Softball Stadium opens this weekend and will play host to the event. A link to live stats can be found at virginiasports.com.
